Hello Jim and all. I have now and also had when I did open my G up almost all the way, the Discount Tire entry level L78 or P235 (have to go out and look) tires. I got the white walls shaved thicker down in National City (next to San Diego). Also yes (hope I'm not hated by the 300 people now who NEVER hot rod their 300s which is OKAY too)..... I've close to 'buried my speedometer' in my G. I was going down interstate 5 so. close to Bakersfield and would of MORE than buried it when, like what happened to you Jim, there was traffic way up ahead. Yes, I was at an INDICATED 139 to 140 and probabley had a good 20 miles per hour MORE to go !!! OKAY, I'll stop the bragging!!! In a minute you'll see why I capitalized all the letters in the word, 'indicated'. I have the standard 3:23 non-sure grip rear end. I did have an engine rebuild with the timing gear marked at the 4 degree retard. A 9.6:1 compression ratio due to piston availability is in it now (I just 'love' it when you specify make it 10.1:1 and they agree then when the ENGINE IS FINISHED, they tell you sorry! The engine was supplied with the stock G camshaft (268 degree duration on both intake and exhaust valves). Hydraulic lifters and cylinders bored 30 over to about 419 cu. in.. Yes it is (sort of) fast but I may get it rebuilt again down the road. What's great about Jeff Carter rebuiding it the next and last time is that I'll be able to get even more punch out of what I already have and not have to worry about #s not matching. The guy's a pro!! He also have the correct pistons to make it a 10.1:1 compr. ratio. I was going to originally have him rebuild it but terrible complications arose from his main machinist. I should have waited but got antcy and regretfully had it done locally. Yes regretfully, because Jeff C. later measured 3 to over 20% compression leakage amongst my cylinders! Now, how (with what I've explained with my 'great' engine rebuild) could I have had an indicated 139 to 140 m.p.h. reading and still be pulling!? Well, my true speed was probabley (the truth comes out) about 125! My pinion gear that runs on the output shaft must not be stock. I've driven before a couple of times were they have a setup alongside the road indicating your true speed. At indicated 80 it was showing 71 in DIFFERENT places!! Okay, I'm very sorry for going off on tangents here. Weren't we talking about TIRES!!?? Talk to all soon! 300ly, Brandt H. The best I ever did was 146 indicated. It was still puling but I was running out of road (traffic ahead) and was also worried about the tires.900x14 byas- ply 4 ply nylon but well used.Has any one on the list burred the needle? The reason I bring this up is there has bean a lot of chatter about tires in the last 6 months. but speed rating is never mentioned! People are concerned about the whit wall and the look.I cant see putting a 90 mile per hour tire on a 150 m.p.h car . My F has a 292 rear cog,413 bored ,060 over (427 c.i) and at that speed was tacking 63-66 hundred r.p.m.bouncing a LOT.Now before you all start yelling Go to silverstateclassic.com. you can also go back through the years and see what the letter cars did in the past..Fast cars should be driven Fast. And by the the fins do apply down force at about 120 m.p.h. When I get the F on the road I will be going with V rated ,and don't care if they are Green Wals.Jim McMullan 300 F James McMullan macthehammer@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Why Wait? Move to EarthLink.
