Some cracks can be fixed if it is in a good spot. You might check around before you start rebuilding another motor. I have a 383 Thats bored and stroked to 426 over 12 years ago. The block had a short crack and hole in it. I used J.B. Weld to repair it. It has held up for over 12 years now.- I also had a 4 cyl. Chevy II in a old Jeep I restored. Their was a crack about 5 inches in length and it went right through the soft plug boss. The machine shop drilled two small holes at each end of the crack to stop it from traveling. Then they took a piece of thicker brass shim stock and did the same thing with J.B. Weld. smeared it on both the block and the shim stock. After it set up I painted the block. You could barely see the repair. It never did leak or come off in all the years I drove it. Bouncing all over the deserts and rocks in the hot desert. It appears that when the engine was rebuilt it had a hair line crack and it was welded to fix the problem. The weld did not hold and the block is stressed. My mechanic put everything together and now I have this problem. Two questions, do you think he can get the block re welded or the only solution is a new block. I am in a dilemma now. I have over 18,000 in this project and already over what I budget to spend. I would appreciate any help in this situation. If I need a new block can anyone give me any suggestions.
