I don't know about '59 gas tanks, but my 66/300 gas tank has a vent tube
that protrudes up from the front of the tank (near the rear axle). If I fill
the tank and drive directly home (less than a mile) and park in my garage,
the tank inevitably overflows thru the vent tube. On a hot day, obviously
due to more expansion, I can get quite a puddle under the car.

I've learned to drive around a little before returning home. At 8 MPG, it
doesn't take a very long drive.
