Frank,
When your puller is attached & tightened, is there room jar the hub 
sideways with a hammer and a big punch ? If you jar the part sideways, 
right under where the nut seats it might loosen the taper. Kinda like the 
way you whack the end of a steering arm to release the tie rod end.
