On the one photo seen, it looks like the new 300 is trying to be a bit like
the latest large BMW sedan - hardly the image of the original 300C ?!
But look at it, you yanks have really been dead in the arse re building good
looking cars since the late 60s - so if you look at the time since (30+
years), and that your largest volume vehicle is a pickup truck - and where
does that leave you - you are suddenly going to get smart/ clever??
Here in Australia Ford, had a rear drive sedan that was our biggest seller
until Nasser stuffed that, turned it into a pregnant looking Taurus, gave if
funny foreign model names like "Forte".
(Nasser apparently showed 1600 Ford workers the prototype of his new vision
- they told him it sucked, he said what would you know - he thankfully has
gone now, serves him right, the people whose opinion he asked for were those
who would normally buy one ??!!)
Since, it has taken maybe 4 years of 'die hards' really chewing their ears
and they have just saved their souls (and the Company still operating here)
with a hefty rework, and a new 290hp quad cam 5.4 litre V8s, and a killer
turbo 260 bhp 6 that they had to detune to make it slower than the V8s.
I have wasted untold letters and emails, which oddly Ford adopted near 95%,
but look at you in the US - a TBird that looks like a Datsun 2000 Fairlady,
with the smaller cube V8 !!! - Ford over there still have a long way to go.
Overall - nowadays you have to have a degree to get a job with these car
companies, being an enthusiast seems to come last ??!! Nissan seems on the
ball, nearly all their cars now not too bad, but who in the US can say that
of any US Company - GM's Cadillac is a tragedy mindful of their accepted
credo "Standard of the World" - the 350Z may not please all, but at least it
is different, sort of works as a sporty 21st century rework of the original
240?
Chrysler - they have done some excellent stuff (Viper, etc.) - but now they
are Daimler and Mitsubishi - don't expect too much.
The original 300s earned a reputation over time - can't see how they will
'rebirth' this unless they come out with real muscle cars with leading edge
handling and braking /other technology - and outstanding sporty styling !!?!
Unless they are going to do a proper job, they are only prostituting a good
name/image. At least they can't take away what we own and appreciate. Have
a good happy easter, get some of your 300s out on the road, burn some gas,
push yourselves back in the seat - go for it.
Aussie Christopher
