Frank,
Get a small flat wrecking bar, such as is used removing wooden trim around 
house windows. Slip the shorter leg of it behind the door handle, under the 
end of the clip, then pull the end of the clip outwards, away from the 
door. You may have to hold pressure against the handle with your other hand 
until the clip releases its bite.
