One other thing - perhaps the "better" vinyl would also not SMELL so bad!? There are a couple of "restored" vehicles in here for repairs/service, with obviously new (vinyl) upholstery, and the odor from the interior is borderline nauseating when you get in them if the doors have not been opened for a day or two. I have to keep the windows rolled up on both cars or they smell up the whole shop. Not really sure how "old" the upholstery is, but I know that one car has been "around" in it's present form for at least a year. Now that I think about it, - I had the door panels re-done on my 59 Sport Fury back around 1988. These panels are only about half vinyl, and the rest is cloth, and 14 years later they *still* "stink".(pretty sure the guy used the "cheap stuff" - I know him).
