Actually, - the 426 Hemi was just a bit compromised from a "true" Hemi by the inclination of the exhaust valves. They were layed in a bit more toward the center of the chamber. As I was told back then (sometime in the 60s) that this made the engine just narrow enough to clear the shock towers when installed from below in the normal "production line" fashion. The spark plugs are centered in the chamber - at least from a "front view", however, they are offset a bit towards the front or rear of the chamber (depending on which bank the head is installed).
