Attention all in the club... Removing a vin plate in many states is a FELONY criminal offense, in other a misdemeanor, in all it is Illegal. Keep that in mind while working on your vehicle. Avoid at all cost removing or tampering w/ the vin plate. In Montana if you remove a vin it is a misdemeanor and if your car has a un-attached vin plate it will be confiscated and a assigned state supplied vin # will be put on the title and stamped on the car. If the vehicle has to be inspected by law enforcement for licensing reasons and a sharp officer notices that the rivets are not original- well look out! You will have a lot of explaining to do and documents to produce. Sometimes it is unavoidable (such as replacing a dash pad in a E body) but if it is avoidable- don't mess with it! I am a law enforcement officer and have been for 21 years, and we are getting more NCIC training all the time on ways to catch thieves altering ID plates etc. as it is a multi-million $ "business" trafficking high dollar collector cars. Just a few words to the wise.....
