'57 brakes

Hi all
Anyone know whether '57 brake drums are a semi or a full gloss black, before I go out and spend some $'s on a high temp coating. 
Also can someone enlighten me on how the spring link which is "sandwiched" in between the support plate {where your return spring holds on to} is attached to the support plate? One of my brake shoes seems to be dragging this link out with it when the adjuster is turned, yet the other shoe is OK. I hope this makes some sort of sense!!
