Johnny,
having recently pull started my '40 NewYorker after a backyard head-off
repair I am offering the following advice:

My case had some similarities with yours. Although comfirming ignition to be
OK, adding starting fluid to the gas, and attaching a running 12V diesel
engine with heavy jumper cables to add higher speed to the 6V starter - it
did not start or even cough. Compression was checked to be extremely low,
not even entering the instruments scale ( but around 30 psi). After the tow
start, which only needed about 1/2 mile of 25 mph before it ran fine, we
again checked the compression. Now it was 70 psi (somewhat lower than the
recommended 90 psi minimum in the 1940 Shop Manual, but twice as much as two
hours earlier). The next day the car would start on its own battery in below
freezing conditions.

My NewYorkers behaviour puzzled me, until I got the following reasonable
explanation: Oil on the cylinder walls adds to the compression. If the car
has been standing for a long period, the oil drains away and the compression
drops too low. Solution is either to add oil in the cylinders before
starting or push/pull-start. This could also (according to my source) affect
freshly overhauled engines with dry cylinder walls.

Concerning upping the voltage, I also believe there was a story in WPC News
long time ago about hooking 4 batteries together for 48V to get a
long-standing Hemi running.

The 392 is still not running but I know it will start if I pull it---get it
up to 18 or 20 mph---I think it's a combination of low comp. and sticky
valves as I know everything is ok and it should start.I am going to try one
more time -----advance--retard timing while spinning fast ----if that
doesn't work , I will pull start it.I am convinced that once it runs for a
while that comp. will improve and it will run ok, but won't know for sure
until it starts. My Dad was a mechanic down in WV. and we use to start
stubborn 6V engines by pulling them all the time, although I admit that was a
while back.----Johnnie Slayton
