[Chrysler300] 58 392 hemi fuel pump

Hello list,
I'm asking a question for a friend on this one.
At a car show over Labor Day weekend, I met a guy and his wife who had the following cars:
1956 Desoto equipped with a 58 300D dual quad engine, and 1958 Desoto equipped with a 58 Chrysler Imperial 392 Hemi engine.
The 56 had an electric fuel pump, which split open at the show. He then set out to local parts houses looking for a mechanical fuel pump. He came back with two pumps, which the store said crossed to a 58 Hemi, but were actually 318 pumps.
He decided to remove the pump from the 58 Desoto to compare the 'arms', and they were definitely different. He decided to try the new pump in the old 58 Desoto hemi, and it did bolt in and work (no funny noises), but you could see the pump flexing the timing cover it was bolted to.
I have his email, so I'd like to pass on the information from this list as to whether he should immediately get that wrong fuel pump out of there, and which pump should he be using.
Thanks,
John
