Here's another idea:
 
Depending how often you tow, it may be better to rent a trailer from Hertz  
or whoever.  I tried to rent one to tow a '59 4dr Chrysler with my Ford  F-150 
and was denied because they felt it wasn't enough truck.  They would,  
however, rent me a truck and trailer combination.  As I recall, it was  under $300 
for a one-way rental from Pennsylvania to Detroit area.  The  peace of mind 
alone was worth the price.
 
As I grow older and am less willing to deal with those little roadside  
emergencies, I find it knid of pleasant to drive a rental on the cross-country  
trips.  That way, if I should have a breakdown I will call the rental  company 
and have THEM wait around for repairs while I take another car and  go on my way.
 
Just my 2 cents worth...
