Christopher and Group- It is hard to say what it means to me (and many other Americans) at this point in history to have so many people from other parts of the world thanking Americans for their part in ending the horrors of World War 2. At this time with so many condemning us for being in Iraq etc. it is wonderful to see my father's generation being remembered for their willingness to fight and die for those who could not. My Dad was(and still is) my hero- He was a sea going Marine, stationed on the Battleship USS Colorado during 1942-43. Why is he a hero? Because he didn't have to go- he had a 4-F draft card, due to a heart murmur. Day after Pearl Harbor, he like so many others went to sign up to fight. The Navy turned him down due to the 4-F status, so he went next door to the Marine recruiting office and the Marines said"We don't care, we'll take you". He rarely talked about it, when he did it was never about the battles, or how he felt etc. just would tell us what his job was ( his battlestation was either on a 40mm anti-aircraft gun or on one of the 5" guns) what life was like on board ship etc. Usually had to pry it out of him. It wasn't until a few short years before he died that I found out he didn't have to go. He explained to me he couldn't have lived with himself if he hadn't have gone. Fortunately for me and my sister and brother, he became ill with a bad appendix and was shipped stateside to the Marine hospital at Camp Pendleton. Six weeks after leaving the Colorado, the gun mount he would have been at received a direct hit- killing every man on the gun. Thank you Christopher for the kind words, and especially for remembering- as long as people remember history we won't be doomed to repeat it. Only free people can enjoy free speech, and those men fought and died to make sure we all have our freedoms.... The 60th anniversary of D Day reminds us too many did not come back, others carrying wounds that affected the rest of their lives - we owe them a debt that can never be forgotten or adequately repaid. To all those Americans that helped Australia in WWII, thank you from me (and untold other grateful aussies) who was not born til after, but had a dad who served in japanese occupied New Guinea, died young because of this. Australia only had about 2,500 in the D day landings, but the papers here have carried the story of one, a 24 year old Melbourne footballer, D Day his birthday. His role was to go in an unarmed boat close to the big shore guns and radio back where the ships guns shells were landing to get the allied range correct. He was eventualy blown out of the water by the huge German guns, he credited to be the first aussie killed in D Day. Lest we never forget. Our 300S came after that terrible war, are special, and we must enjoy them.
