You can find most anything on eBay. Try a search for exactly what you want and if few or no hits, than go slowly more generic, less specific. Also look at "Check My other Auctions", or "Visit my eBay Store" for each auction page you look at. Often the seller has a store and the items aren't all listed for auction. I gotta answer this! Jo Ann and I had a '61 Chevy Impala SS Conv with a factory 409/425+ and 4 speed. We bought this in 1962 with the Certificate Of Origin, never titled. It was first owned but never titled by a gas station who raced it at US 30 Drag-a-way inear York, PA. We ran it all summer in 62 at US 30 Drag-a-way. During the week, it was Jo's kid carrage (and she wasn't afraid to kick butt). Somewhere, I have a strip ticket from a run against a 300H, and I think I got out at the end and waited for him...just kidding. But I did beat him by several seconds. I usually ran in the 13's. That car was one of 7 built, and I had to put a 327 in it to sell it some years later! If only I knew!!! Hope to see you all at the Spring Meet, Ray -- Ray Jones, Jones Ridge, in the Ouachita Mtns near Mena, Western Arkansas > From: "PaddyCaddy ." <paddycaddy@xxxxxxxxxxx> > Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2004 06:02:26 -0500 > To: flip7@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx, chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx > Subject: Re: [Chrysler300] What makes a 300 "real"?? > > > Tha't's interesting.... > > I wonder if anyone out there has any old magazines with road tests from '62 > ???? > > I really am curious (honestly) how a 1962 BelAir bubbletop with a 409/425 > would do in a drag race against a 62 300 ........ > > If not - maybe we have ourselves a great idea for one of the meets this > summer. The RamChargers car had only a three speed manual transmission in it. The first race found the Dodge beating the Chevy by about five to seven car lengths. The crowd went nuts. In the second race the Dodge took off with a huge lead, about three car lengths before blowing the one to two shift and lost the race by about six feet. The Dodge running was a two door sedan running the B body. The third and final run was a repeat of the second race with the RamCharger's driver missing the one to two shift after another huge starting lead. The car lost the race by about two feet. Dodge definitely had the power and the speed to deal with the Chevy even with the disadvantage of the three speed manual. It was not long after that the Dodges and Plymouths had four speed manuals available. Lurking in the wings was the Torqueflite transmission that won a ton of match and sanctioned races. The 300 H would not be able to compete with the Dodge because of weight. Hot Rod magazine ran a 300 H in the 1962 year but it did not run Super Stock like the B body Dodges and Plymouths. I happen to have magazines from 1962 on up and here's what I found: Chevrolet introduced the bored out 348 c.i. as a 409 c.i. / 360hp / 409 lb/ft / 11.25c.r. ( RPO#580 ) option on the 1961 Impala SS models of which 142 were built. In 1962 they increased the hp to 380 and 420 lb / ft torque / 11.00 c.r. ( RPO #580 again ) to begin the model year and later boosted it to 409 / 409 / 420 @11.00 c..r which Car Life magazine tested in the Sept. 1962 issue driven by owner / racer Frank Sanders of Phoenix, Az. He ran 12.22 e.t @ 115 mph at Pomona in June 1962. Of course it was set up to his specs for racing only with a 4-spd xmsn, 4.56 rearend, modified springs, shocks, tires, etc. Writer of the test claims Frank was the fastest shifter he'd ever seen and was a full half-second faster than any of their test drivers. Nov. 1962 Hot Rod lists Dave Strickler from York, Pa winning the 1962 Nat'ls at Indy in the SS/S class in a 62' 409 ( Old Reliable ) with 12.97 e.t. and 113.35 mph. Sadly, Dave switched to Dodge in 1964 and was eliminated in the 1st round by Bobby Harrop, even though his e.t was quicker at 11.33 to Harrop's 11.66. Hot Rod magazine itself ran a 1962 Plymouth in SS / SA losing to Ramchargers Dodge in class eliminations and to Bill "Maverick" Golden in his 62 Dodge in Stock Eliminator with the fastest e.t. recorded for stock cars at 12.37 in an earlier run. Back the the bow-ties, in 1963 there were four hp offerings for the 409: 340, 400, 425, and 430. According to http://chevysupersports.com/Impala61-64.htm the 1961 409 / 360 tested by Motor Trend ran the 1/4 at 14.02 @ 98.14 mph w / 4.56 gears, or about a two seconds faster than the 300H which as we all know gave up a few ( hundred ) pounds in the weight dept. In other words, it got its butt kicked... seem to remember a national tour ( exhibition ) involving said 409 bubbletop and a super stock Dodge and I think the Dodge won most of the races. A more balanced pairing there. Hope that answers some of your questions. Johnson" <laurence_g_johnson@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: RE: 1962 Chevy versus 300H This race was covered in the old Super Stock magazine (Before it was Super Stock and Drag Illustrated). I may still have the magazine if I look through my junk. The unique thing about the Dodge was that it was NOT a Max Wedge. It used service package cylinder heads with 2.08 intakes and 1.74 exhausts (a forerunner of the 300J head), a 292 degree flat tappet cam, and long ram intake manifolding (the 405 horse versions with the short dividers). I don't know how they shoehorned the long manifolds into the B body, but they did somehow. I saw the same car at the '62 Indy Nationals, this time equipped with the Torqueflite. I was seated in the grandstand directly behind the starting line where the timing tower now sits. I could clearly see the long rams when they opened the hood to cool the engine between rounds. NHRA hot lapped the Super Stock field so the Ramchargers were pouring water over the radiator while pushing it back to the starting line. By the time they reached the finals the Dodge was steaming hot and ran poorly. They were beaten in the final by Hayden Profitt's 409, but the Dodge was much stronger than any of the 409's when the engine was cool in the early rounds. >From: quentsmith@xxxxxxx >To: chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx >Subject: [Chrysler300] 1962 Chevy versus 300H >Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2004 21:04:36 EST >Detroit Dragway in 1962 had a match race with Don Nicholson and his 1962 >Chevy 409 Hardtop 4 Speed with the special roof making a run against a >Dodge 413. >The RamChargers car had only a three speed manual transmission in it. > > The first race found the Dodge beating the Chevy by about five to >seven car lengths.
