Remove the washers, gap and install the spark plugs. With stock pistons and deck heighth, there will be no part interference. Wayne -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ Date: Wed, 23 Jul 2003 11:59:38 +0200 From: "Ulf Larsson" <ulf.larsson@xxxxxxxx> Subject: Spark plugs, Hi all experienced hemi (392) mechanics, I have a question about what is given in the service manual chap. 45 SPARK PLUGS, sect c "No gaskets are used on double rocker shaft engines" I think the very same topic was discussed not long ago on the listserver but have been unable to track down the reply to what is the meaning of the given recommendation. Is the instruction that one ought to remove the washer originally found on the new spark plugs? When looking at an old (original ?) one it has no washer, but then again if comparing the overall length from seating to the top electrode it measures; 0,04" shorter if washer is kept on a new plug and 0,04" LONGER if the washer is cut away. Have I misunderstood the intention if removing the washers, and will there be any risk for close contact while measuring length longer than compared to an old spark plug (new and old spark plug are different brands) Grateful for some good advice on this, Ulf Larsson, 3N57 2660 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 2 Date: Wed, 23 Jul 2003 09:31:49 -0500 From: "Wayne Graefen" <wgraefen@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Imperial Services MANY very positive comments on Steve Charrette and Imperial Services and the parts offered there. No further comments needed. Clearly a VERY GOOD SOURCE. How come I had never heard of them before?? I dunno. I explained on the many hemis I rebuilt, many of the tubes are so galled up , and in some casses, the end of the tube has seperated and allows oil to get into the tube and short the plug. I do install the gasket to prevent further damage to the mating surface of the tube. In many casses, I have had to replace the tube because of this situation. The extra .020 to .030 shorter reach does not affect the plug firing properly because of the extended reach of the electrodes. Most of the damage done to the tube is because too much torque has been applied to the plug without the gasket. In a few extreme casses, when removing the plug, the end of the tube comes with it because of over-torquing and spreading the end of the tube that "clamps" around the plug. It is cut out like an aluminum washer and is almost paper thin. And so speaks the oricle! Discussion?
