Subject: 1964 K console courtesy light problem

I need some help with solving a problem with the courtesy lights on the
console on my '64 K convertible.  They do not light when I open the doors.  I have
continuity on the console cable itself, and continuity to ground at the
instrument panel is good.  Four-wire connect to instrument panel continuity is good.
Map light and back seat courtesy lights perform when doors are opened.  The
problem is only with the console lights.

I do not have a wiring diagram for the console itself.  My shop manual shows
wiring for the instrument panel and body but none for the console.  My parts
book shows the cable but no color code.  My actual color of wiring differs from
wiring diagram in that power line to fuse box is green rather than red, and
line to ground is white rather than black.  I am ready to start over with the
console cable, but wonder if anybody else has run into this problem or has any
suggestions or a wiring diagram for the console courtesy lights.  Thanks.

I'd first check that the console structure is grounded to the rest of the
car, by running a temporary jumper wire between the console metal and a
known good ground on the dash, etc.  If that fixes it, then install a
permanent grounding wire.

Hi All,

I have a replacement dash cluster and now I would
like to reset the new odometer to the original miles.

Does anyone have a procedure for resetting
the odometer?

Mark,
I recently reset my odometer on my 62 by gently removing the pin with the
gears on it, and rolling the numbers by hand by turning the gear on the
barrel.  It worked in either direction, so if yours shows less than the
original, you can advance it and if it shows more, you can set it back.
Just be careful not to lose the little bushings on the top and bottom of the
gear pin. When you re-install the pin, bend the aluminum retaining tab
enough to eliminate the play, but not too tight so it doesn't bind.  If you
remove the barrel with the numbers on it, you'll have difficulty lining up
the numbers when you re-install it.

Mark

Subject: A/C Questions

Hi, All,

Having never attempted any a/c work, I'm completely in the dark about how to
remove the a/c system from my K, for the purpose of detailing the engine
compartment.  The last time it was charged, it blew cool (1980, I think) until the
freon leaked out.  We were never able to find the leak.  What I'd like to do
is remove it all, paint it, paint the engine and have a professional put it
back together and get it cooling again.  Since there is certainly no freon in it,
can I just unbolt everything and remove it?  Should I cap all the lines,
openings, etc. to protect the innards?  What to use for caps?  What do I need to
do to drive the car without the a/c on it (like how to deal with the heater
hoses and pulleys)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

George Clineman

I was visiting Gary Goers, a couple of week ends ago, and he showed me his reproduction of the dual-four (in line) oval shaped air filter cartridges.  Pse contact Gary@xxxxxxxxxxxxx for pricing and further details. I can't remember the exact price but I think he told me around twenty some dollars each. My understanding is that the normal supply of these is  pretty well non existent so this is good news so please give Gary some support with some of his projects and place your orders.  Thanks from Fern in Cranbrook BC

Hi Fern and all

Oval air filters do not need to be reproduction. They are made by a couple
of manufacturers. I am a jobber for numerous parts mid 50's to mid 60's
including the oval (57 to 59) and round for the Cross Ram cars. Oval are
$17 ea., round $16 ea. plus a few $ ship.
A few other items:
1) WCFB carb kits.
2) AFB early carb kits
3) temperature senders
4) Vacuum safety switches
5) Upper and lower radiator hoses
6) 57/58 hemi water by pass hose
7) dist caps and rotors w/ brass lugs
8) 57/58 power steering pump kits
9) 57/58 power steering box kits
10) 56/58 starter solenoid
11) wheel cylinder kits
12) wheel bearings and seals
13) starter and generator brushes
14) 57/61 a/c compressor shaft seal conversion to late seal
15) 61/up a/c compressor shaft seal and gasket set
16) 56/61 Torque Flite pan gaskets

I can't think any more. If you can't find something I will try.

I tried to find the oval air filters and several air filters were
supposed to be for the car and weren't.  I worked for the insurance
agency that insured K & N Filters.  When I had difficulty finding the
oval air filters for my '62 (with dual inline fours), I contacted K & N
to see if they had filters that fit.  I measured and measured and
couldn't get a good fit.  Finally out of desperation, I sent them my
cans and they custom fit the air filters.  They are actually round
filters that bend a bit to an oval shape when put in the cans.  I have
been running them for 50,000 miles and they work beautifully.  They are
readily available at pretty much any auto parts store.  Because K & N
are filters that you clean and oil they should never need to be
replaced, so they are a long term solution.  K & N Filter #E-3620

Greetings Group-
Beware of both Federal laws and any state laws where you live before you
change the setting on ANY odometer. While you may have good reason or what
might be perfectly innocent in your mind might get you into deep legal
trouble. In Montana where I live older vehicles are exempt from odometer
statements but you can still be sued in a civil trial (now there is an
oxymoron if I have ever heard one) and forced to defend yourself at a
considerable expense. If you feel the need to change the odometer reading,
DOCUMENT what you do and why with photos or even video, it could save you a
large head ache and legal bill later. Always disclose what you did and why
( when you decide to sell the car) and have the buyer sign a statement that
they know and waive any legal recourse. It may or may not hold up in court
but at least you can prove they knew prior to buying the car.
