Subject: Value of "Kiekhaefer race car" - Kruse auction

I'm having trouble with the concept that the genuine original  Tim Flock
300B race car is up for auction in Florida.  Fact is Jack Boxstrum bought
it from the Kiekhaefer estate when it was for sale in Hemmings (y'all had
your chance!) and then sold it to Bob Valpey who turned it into a true
legal vintage race car at considerable expense while maintaining all the
originality he could within the rules.  Recently under agreement Jack
bought it back from Bob for what I hear was a very large amount of money
and one of our club members talked to Bob who said something along the
lines of no amount of money would ever buy the car again.

So, I have to assume the FL auction car is a clone.  That being the case
it is worth whatever anyone is willing to pay for an imitation.  I've
received no response as yet from Kruse regarding the car.

Subject: Radio Upgrades - LED

Hi,

For some strange reason, Antique Automobile Radio started  with the LED's
at
some point. They had converted a number of radios for me with no LED's in
the past.  Then all of a sudden one shows up with the LED.  very small,
I'll
grant you, and I didn't even see it until the radio was installed and
turned
on. It really freaked me out, as it looked totally out of place when the
radio was on. Also, performed no discernible function.

I was able to take the radio out, remove its face plate and switch it with
another, burying the LED inside the radio.  From this point on, I always
specify "no LED ! " when sending them a radio.  It detracts from the
overall
appearance and beautiful soft lighting of the 60 thru 62 dashes.  I don't
want them to drill a hole in the faceplate !

These radios are converted using Kenwood guts, I do believe, according to
Mike  @ Antique Auto Radio. They really do a beautiful job and the sound
is
awesome if hooked up to good speakers.

There is one "caveat" - these radios do not like low voltage, at all, at
all. A good electrical system is necessary, or strange popping noises will
occur. This was a big factor in using one such radio on the 300L, which
had
a notoriously bad electrical system design. At night, at idle, the lights
would dim quite a bit, and voltage would drop to about 8.5 volts at the
fuse block !  with the a/c running, forget it !  Submitted to such low
voltage, the radio would make "popping" sounds out of the speakers
everytime
any electrical accessory was used - stepping on the brakes = "pop" ; using
turn signal = pop-pop-pop in time with the turn signals. This drove my
friend Bob crazy in his '66, to the point that he redesigned the
electrical
system completely, using a more modern alternator.

1965 and 1966 Chryslers seem to be more prone to this problem than other
years. I never experienced this problem in a 300F or 300G . All this to
say,
if you are considering such a conversion, better check the voltage
available
at idle, with lights on, at least !

No, Paul, I have never asked for the old guts to the radio back.   Don't
know what I'd want them back for.

It is a real pleasure to be driving down the road and hit the "seek"
floor-button with the foot, and watch the stations change and the pointer
move up and down the dial. And be able to listen to FM music..

On that LED that AAR installs, I believe it is there to indicate the FM
band is selected.  At least, that is what it did for my '51 Windsor radio
I had AAR convert to AM/FM.  It did work well, and I have to say that I
found the LED useful to have.  The way the band was changed was to turn
the power off for 5 seconds and then back on again.

No complaints about the cost or service.

Well, Bob, good friends can disagree about some minor point, and still
enjoy
a beer together the next time they meet. I find the LED offensive and
redundant - after all, the radio always goes to FM when first turned on;
and, as you correctly indicated, in order to be switched over to AM, it
does
indeed then have to be turned off for about 5 seconds, and restarted.  So
-
who needs the LED ? yes, it glows red when on FM and green on AM, but do
you
ever really  need it to confirm which band you are on ?

No, what really upsets me about the LED is that it gives an otherwise
perfect conversion away ! I like my cars to retain as much of their
original
flavor as possible, and having that dang red light glaring at me in the
middle of a beautiful electroluminescent '61 dashboard, at night,  soft
green lighting and all, well, it really upset me . Fortunately I had a
parts
radio and was able to undo the damage.

Maybe it wouldn't look as offensive on some other model or make of car.
Or,
maybe the car owner would prefer to have it. The only point I wanted to
make
is that, if someone is considering having the conversion made, they should
be aware that a hole might be drilled in the faceplate, and a LED placed
there, and that they have the option of requesting that this not be done,
if
they so choose !

I agree, no complaints about price or service.

Hope we can have that beer together soon. I made it out to your coast (and
to your house as well...) . When are you going to honor us with your
presence ? See you in Battle Creek?

I,ve had the original exhaust manifolds on my 66 GTO hot coated in the
original cast iron color. The job was excellent & it has held up well.
I've
had headers hot coated the aluminum color on several cars. The exhaust
heat
dulls the color somewhat, but the pipes have held up well. The result is
much better than any header paint you can buy. The cost is much higher,
but
in my opinion worth it.

John,

Its probably my audiophile interests getting in the way of my car
pursuits.  I guess I kind of liked the LED on the '51 Chrysler.  As far as
the '61 G goes, I installed a separate power amp and small equalizer with
CD plug-ins.  I have a small "Walkman type" Sony AM/FM CD player I just
plug in the equalizer and get great sound through the hidden speaker
system installed in the car.  The CD player has Velcro on it, and I stick
it to a custom cut mouse pad that sits on the console.

Speakers consist of replacing the 6 X 9 in the dash with a pair of 4"
coaxials, and 5" coaxials are installed in the kick panels.  Also I
managed to get a small powered subwoofer hidden under the dash. It is a
"stealth" system, the cost was low, and it sounds great.

By the way, I'm looking forward to Reno!
