Hi Dave , IMHO on this There was a correct comment about looking for silver dust in oil ; however , that will not be able , in general , to get though a good oil filter . Mopar has a lot of fat in that fire , the only one to buy . =
Magnet oil pan nut is good I think
Warrantee issues are huge $ on mopar , want that filter right .
I do not trust some major brands they are junk . NAPA gold seems good too .I saw them all cut open Mopar really was the best . $ a little more , but I buy at dealer , no fakes.
So check if silver dust or particles in drain oil ,and if noise getting worse, markedly low lift . On one ...
Given that , real lifter tick does not increase , and is usually not a big issue -- as from two experiences -- it picks up suddenly one day long after initial miles , maybe 5 k or more and just ticks with no real changes ( as opposed to louder and louder over a few thousand miles , and early)
How an individual reacts to all this is a big part of it . Hard to stay loose .
The tick is a classic stuck lifter . Mine came on 318 truck I loved(a 79 restored step side), started on bitterly cold winter day at around 90 k , perfect motor Who knows why .. In Dunkin line . A tiny dirt particle from inside oil passage , probably way under .001 either jams in concentric slide of lifter or gets into hydrauic valve part of lifter . Did it for 10000 on mine . My first response was try thinner 5W or 10w 30 mobil one , wind it up etc
Aggravation-- Fed up , ready to fix, but punted on it . Then one day gone forever,,after 10k Had caused slight uneven running too , a tic in vacuum meter . Without belaboring what , (does not matter ), it was slightly collapsed or stuck in its telescopic slide , clicks with little harm , acts like a solid Rapid progression to louder and louder as in thousands ,is a different animal, and a reason for concern from day one . Progression is key . Tick may go or not . But you keep going .
Wiped lobe trouble , yes .. have to fix , but realize residua wont get through oil filter . Despite common doomsday view And gets louder , A lot , A skip Means new cam and lifter set , big job, if silver dust / particles , a big loss of lift , worsening skip . Should be ok with new valve parts oil changes and filter
Remember clean well filtered lube oil flows outward from inside , I don t think motor is hurt . MHO , nothing to lose . Another thing is ANY antifreeze in oil causes fast cam and lifter collapse and totals all of motor . 4.0 liter jeep does this with a crack in head top 1999 to 2002. Been there twice , whole motor is rendered scrap Look for obvious yellowy foamy look at filler or in valve cover , at PVC valve if present , water vapor, but yellow foam with it is definitive

My friend is a lifelong engine builder , a true pro, 3 man shop , full machining etc he has built 1000 plus engines, including coyotes with .700 lift ... And many stroked hemi etc , 3 engines for me . He has a seven second street camero , blown etc . Nuff said
One summer in the past , he had to EAT a dozen 20,000 $ race engines , almost broke him financially . Honest guy , -- he made it right Big had the fight with comp, over the wiped lifters story . They said oil , zddp fairy story etc all BS. He told them he has used 4-5 55 gallon drums of stockpiled oil , same the past , same oil, 3 years .Before and after this And after . He bought it in bulk Next ? Zero problems , never any issues suddenly lots of problems , zero failures prior
He had some lifters before episode (during and after ) on shelf , he examined w microscope , noticed totally different machining marks
He had them checked at lab ,-- different heat treat . He settled with them . Cannot tell any more -- confidential -- but he went elsewhere on lifters And problems were gone .
Cams apparently were still made probably ok . But lifters hurt them Not sure of all the intrigue
Coincidentally I was building a stroked 392 , ( 450") he did all the machining . Lots of it . (an Ex dragster billet crank) , Mallory metal , aftermarket chev smaller rod journals etc to balance , etc
I had decided ( at the time), I liked I liked the story of (? Howards?) lifters , with . the approx .015 hole in the center of cam face ( solids) . Went that way . Car still not finished , but I saw that those have doubled in price --big money now. must work , 5 years +on ... waiverd around a bit on that , but went with it Not current on all this today-- but heads up . Your story of ? wiped ? lifter yet done in . but cam " not destroyed " may sort of flits this .
Why i bring it up was how vehemently they stuck to the " Story" --- when the story was obvious bullshit from the story . And it stopped happening , same oil , cam etc . with used with other lifters Draw your own conclusions , I did I feel a I accidentally dodged a bullet I soon put in aftermarket roller lifters in on a 440 hydraulic . No problem , not loving them , but was afraid of snuck in flat tappets from Asia .
Yet flat are / were ok on millions of 440s , all probably real mopar, made in usa etc Nothing normal done ,just thrown in used by the millions across 25 years .
Probably ok now..
Maybe Mancini etc may have good stuff , just detour around this . Why bother with a dance .. not worth the aggravation , will never get to bottom . Hard coat is thin on cam if it is hurt you need both imho jkg
