In a previous post, I mentioned that we have added an additional activity for the Spring meet in Asheville on Friday, May 29th, which is a visit to the Phil Combs Museum in Shelby, North Carolina.
There is an interesting connection here between Phil's family and a car that one of our club members has:
Phil's father, Roby Combs, was one of the first flaggers in NASCAR and his mother was in charge of ticket sales/accounting/score keeping for drivers in the early days. In addition to their work with NASCAR, Roby Combs was a prolific sign writer in and around Shelby. He lettered the 1960 Buick that was used as a support vehicle and pace car (this was sometimes used as an ambulance) which John and Jupei Hannon created a replica of with their Buick wagon for a NASCAR anniversary event several years ago. Below are a couple of photos of this fantastic car!
Attached are a couple more photos (a young Phil and his mother behind the wheel).
Maybe John and Jupei will bring this car to Asheville, as well as one of their 300s?!
