Re: {Chrysler 300} Kiekhaefer Experimental 331 Intake

Okay and thanks for asking.

Besides a C-300 I have a number of other cars with the first gen FirePower Hemi.  A couple are Chryslers and a few more are Cunninghams, including a recreation of the C-4RK as described in the attached article that R&T ran a few years ago. It’s essentially the stunt double for the Revs museum’s car.

Each summer an outfit called the Loring Timing Assn (LTA) rents the closed down Loring AFB near Caribou ME to run speed trials. The LTA attracts everything from motorcycles, to home-made belly tankers, and everything else imaginable, and sometimes unimaginable.  The airstrip is 2.5 miles long. The flagger sends cars or bikes from a dead stop to timing lights at 1.0, 1.25 and 1.5 miles, leaving a mile to stop.

The original C-4R’s were clocked at around 150 on the 3.7 mile long Mulsanne Straight at LeMans in the early 50’s so I decided to give it a go with mine. For four years now I have made the 1200+ mile drive up from home and back in the C-4RK.   The results the first three years were in the 141-143 range until I had to lift.  This year with a fresh set of plugs it hit an all time best of 148. Maybe had a tail wind ? Who knows.

150 would have been nice but with a 5 MPH improvement in the bag and facing the 600+ mile drive home I decided to be happy with 148. I could see where with an extra mile like at LeMans 150 would be possible. Cunningham was no doubt using freshly prepared motors. My Hemi has logged 1000’s of miles since built is my excuse.

Below is a photo of original Cunningham log intakes that they cast in aluminum in the early 50’s for both the race cars and the street cars. They were fitted with four Zenith one barrels. Besides more power they saved 30 lbs. of weight in the nose versus the stock cast iron manifold.

Back in the day Cunningham sold the intakes, carbs, linkage and thermostat housing as a package for about $375, claiming to add 38 HP over the stock Carter 2 barrel.

I can confirm that it is a very responsive package, besides hitting 148 with the car this summer.  But that’s another story.
