RE: {Chrysler 300} 4 speed 300F convertible for sale - And our Fall 2025 Buffalo Meet -

John,

About 1990 or so I was in a auto wrecking yard near Travis ABF here in Northern California. In it was a 1964 300K (RAM) Convertible. I got the VIN and have the sheet from the club in my files someplace.

The car was burned up from the rear (right) all the way to the firewall. The engine bay looked just fine. The top mechanism was a melted mess the seats and the dash were all melted and the like.

The interesting thing is the body was not in bad shape as the heat all went directly up so things were not warped much.

The story goes that this guy purchased the car and took it to the tire shop for a brake job and new tires.

The evidently got the adjusters in wrong and it tightened with every stop. He drove it home and parked it in the garage. Then filed the trunk with suitcases for a trip to Lake Tahoe.  About 15 minutes later they smelled smoke and went to the garage and the car was on fire.

Seemingly little things with the rear brakes or rearend can cause a lot of pain.  One thing I do on my cars is to clean and powder coat my rearends and the brake backing plates.  They clean off a lot easier so that there is not a buildup of greasy dirt that can catch fire!

I often wondered if anyone every purchased that wreak and did anything with it.

James

I had quite a time with Carl . I bought an F convert in 70’s he had “ got running ok” and, with a “Boston hippie” friend flew out , paid cash and proceeded to drive it home . The rear brakes caught fire on the Dan Ryan at 5 pm . Caused huge jam .

That cost me 5000$ in 1970 ‘s cash I did not have   , towing ,2 people  flying back , impoundment by cops , shipping an inop  car etc .

Carl had been in the rear axle ,and  frankly not being very swift, he let the pins in sure grip fall out , I know this because the shim pack was completely missing — when I got into it, yet new seals, and the pins were in the bottom of pumpkin. Clueless.  Could not get the .013 with no shims so he just put it back together . when you do that the Timken does not seat on center , brake drum moves up and drags on the bottom of of rear shoes . About  75-100 miles later at 70 mph it  all burns up . 50 years ago , still irritating as can be .

Easily the worst car trip of my life—plus ,I also have to say Madison in 70’s had no use for Boston hippies   , my friend  was the black  leather  coat with silver studs type .( in fact a genius, his dad had 400 patents, he invented Technicolor )

the feeling we had about the place was quite mutual .

Like some bad surrealist movie, — that town in 70’s .

Carl basically said you bought it as is . Stiffed .

When I lived in Bensenville, IL in the fall of 1976 when I worked at the “Regency Hyatt House” (as it was called in those days) in Rosemont, I bought a black 300H from Carl Reierson in Wisconsin for $800. It didn’t have the dual quads but was otherwise a complete and correct car.  Carl had an enormous building with many Letter cars including at least one Carl Kiekhafer C300/300B as well as a cinnamon 300G that Carl said belonged to Mr.K that was his personal car.

The reason for my trip up to see George was that My car was missing a set of the correct wheelcovers and George had a set listed in one of the club bulletins (May have been “Brute Force”.) Anyway, I drove up there and visited with him for a few hours and saw his red 300H convertible and that’s how I first learned of “Leatherique”. I also bought the wheelcovers 😁

It was several years after my visit that George and his buddy bought this car.

Following these listserver comments re the sole P-a-M 4-speed 300-F convertible - reminding me of stories our friend Joe Jordan has shared with me and fellow members about his experiences with this 4-speed F convertible, including his going with George Cone to pick it up in Wisconsin on a snowy winter night. Joe's said that he likely drove this car more under George's watch than George did. I unfortunately joined our 300 Club after George had passed, so never had the honor of meeting him, but did meet his son a few years ago at our local MCACN show near O'Hare.

Send in your Registration Form and join us at our Buffalo Meet. Joe will join us there for the official unveiling of his twin Paxton supercharged 413 Andy Granatelli Tribute 300-F coupe. You'll have the incredible opportunity to see and hear Joe's remarkable Tribute F, but also to visit with him and listen to his many stories about this F convertible, that 82-yr-old Joe Aluise currently appears to be marketing.

Eye candy fer sure!  I may have posted these photos sometime in the past on the listserver, but maybe for benefit of newer members, here is the car as it appeared in 1982 when I first saw it and it was owned by Bruce Hoover and George Cone in Illinois.  This was at the AACA show at Allstate Insurance headquarters in Deerfield, IL on June 5, 1982.  They had a Chrysler 300 letter car class.  My dad took the photos using slide film. The car was consigned for sale to Volo Museum not long after; I think the asking price was around $16,000.  Top dollar then believe it or not, laughable now.  Times have changed, inflation has taken its bite, and the car became valuable.
