I didn't put any clear on mine. I would say you need to remove the paint from the cones or your gears will never come off again.

Hello all,
I continue to work on my 300 F and hope to have it ready for this years car season. While the body is out for paint, I am working on the restoration of the hubcaps. I have painted the insets with the Cummins Apex Red paint that was recommended. I would like to put a clear coat over the top to help protect the paint. My question is, would it be correct to use a Matte clear or gloss clear? Just trying to keep as close to the original look as possible.
Thank you
Jay Williamson
