{Chrysler 300} 1964 Chrysler Rear Quarter Window Outer Felts

FYI.

I have had nothing but trouble with the passenger side outer quarter window felts.

The issue after many hours of working on it comes down to two things.  The first is that the available felts, I got mine from QQD, are too short under SOME circumstance.  The problem is that the factory when they welded the inner webbing were not all that accurate.  I measured 3/32 difference in the width between the outer panel and the inner webbing from side to side.

Why is this an issue?  Because the rear slider bolts to the webbing and that sets the in-out distance relative to the outer belt line.  There is no adjustment other than the header rail and that does one no good when the window is 80% or more up. It is that rail bolted to the webbing.  If the mistake had been the other way one could shim it, but not if it is too close.

The second issue I mentioned is that the QQD felts for the quarter window are too short by about 1 to 1.5 inches.  What happen is that the window going up or down AND pressing outward due to the webbing being off, presses against the felt. But the edge of the frame ends up catching on the end of the felt.

Mine was good for about six months of use, but as the header seal started to “mold in” with use, it shifted outboard enough to catch the window frame. It scratched the glass and the frame a bit and twisted the end of the felt good.

Had the felt been longer by one or so inches it would have “rode” over the frame going up and down.

I am going to contact QQD and ask for two more rear outer felts that the end, after the bend in the belt line, be 2 inches longer.  I can then cut it back deeper and that will help with the problem but not cure it.  The only way to cure it would be to pull the entire mechanism and try bending the arms to pull the window inboard a bit.  But I am very hesitant to go down that rabbit hole.

I am posting this so other working on ’63 or ’64 cars are aware of the issue.
