{Chrysler 300} 64 K back glass seal

Looking for some input on a strange discovery after removing my back glass and gasket to replace the rusted away clips and screws.
.
Attached is a picture of a white closed cell foam strip I found under the gasket: 1/2" wide and approx. 1/16" thick. I have never seen this before, nor has my antique auto glass shop heard of it. I found no reference in the parts book or in the Archives.

I can see why it may have been used, as the metal surface finish in the channel is pretty uneven. Anyone else come across this foam installed?

And now to treat the rust. I find the current recommended plan of attack on the rust will be treatment with OSPHO and then using a channel sealer.

By the way, I used the GOOP hand cleaner to both soften and lube the gasket, keeping it wet over a weeks time. I used a large Snap On hose pick to slowly work the gasket loose on the outside from the channel, and pushed the GOOP into the gasket lip inside and let it steep.

The glass pushed out easily. I worked a corner and held it in, and then just ran my finger towards the center flipping the gasket out and worked this across the top and both sides.

And yes, it was an unholy mess. But the GOOP did soften and help remove all the sealant, still sticky as anything after all these years.

Like the old adage:  Cheap and Good - won't be Fast!
