Re: {Chrysler 300} VIn Plate

I had one come off once and so I used " unpopped" rivets only as a means to realign it to the exact same place and put a small dab of liquid nails on the back. I did not swage the rivets in place- only used as alignment tools if you will. Cut a wooden tomato stake the width of the door opening and lightly wedged it in place in the door opening overnight. Looked fine ever since.

My 65 fury one was hanging on by a thread as someone looked like they tried to pry it off for a cheap repaint. I just used a same set of rivets and actually crimped those on. The car had a repaint and when I did the vin inspection, no one asked a question why rivets were there. So depends on state registered.

The "adhesive without rivets" option is probably best as it is the only way it will go back on and lay flat. I have seen a few with a pea sized dab of factory adhesive behind them with the little weld tacks holding them on as added measure- almost like there was someone gluing these early on the line and then someone tacking them later to certify the number or something.

(This is of course only applicable to our older pre 69 models before they moved the plate to the dash and used the rosette style rivets there).

In California they give us grief for not having rivets to begin with. If it's already registered, it shouldn't be a problem.

I don't know about California, but in Illinois if the VIN plate comes off of the car, the State Police are required to use special rivets to re attach.

I would just use rivets on it. That way you don't mess up the holes.

I was working on the 300K the other day and my boot caught the plate on the driver’s side door pillar.  It came clean off. The factory spot welds were not too deep on this one.

So, since I do not have a spot welder, how would one put it back on.  There are alignment holes in the door pillar as well as the plate. In fact the assembly manual shows to line up the holes and spot weld it just below on the inside of the holes.

My thoughts are:

  1. Glue it down.
  2. Screw it down.
  3. Use type “U” (round head) drive screws.

Anyone want to chime in?  James.
