Re: {Chrysler 300} Jay Leno “Assess and Caress” Episode - 300G

As someone that just spent more than this restoring an F, I have to say it may not have been a good investment, but I love the car.

I looked for an F for over 20 years without finding one in a condition I could live with. Nobody would sell me their beautiful F coupe.

But I'd find G's aplenty. In good condition, fairly priced and I nearly pulled the trigger twice. But then I stopped myself. I knew when I came out to the garage at night to sit among the cars I'd look at the G and no amount of lighting, squinting or pretending would make it an F

Some describe the 61 Chrysler facelift as a vulgar defacement. I wouldn't go that far.

After all, I own a 1961 Plymouth.

Subject: Re: {Chrysler 300} Jay Leno “Assess and Caress” Episode - 300G

agree totally , I had a nice white G coupe along with 2-3 F ~ 30 years ago . G was the best of lot,  all original rust free Nevada car off a Reno used car lot , drove it  home to  Boston .
To be honest , first thought was parts for F . All grey prime  under , zero rust
But it was  too good  , so paint etc
But I could not shake the feeling that I just don't like the styling  , front and especially rear. Later a  black G  convert with air came along , same thing .
One day I just decided I want F not G  sold both G.
I think  over time G and F will further separate in value . Whereas E has come  to look really good  ( to me) E used to seem a step back …
Agree totally on your $ numbers too .
Another aspect of $ is the fact that our $ are way lower in purchasing  power  , hard to factor into thinking as we are older ..
A new 440 challenger convert cost me 3000$ in 1970 , today they want almost 100 k for Jeep GW or F 150
etc . 30:1 ? No way am I ever paying that level money for those cars .
 Even today’s  money !
If you factor that in , we may be losing value now  . I have to remind myself it is now play money . Saw a 2.50 coke , i remember .05 . I mean it is colored water ( free?) and spoon of sugar . 50 x ?
.39 Macdonald s burger , can't get out of there under 10$ now , tricky pricing , “1$ special”  , but $ 2. .49 for 10 french fries .
I never cared a great deal  about $ in cars , just went after  ones I liked . So 59 Rambler Cross Country ( front seat makes a bed)  Desoto Adventurers, D500 converts, XKE v12  , an  Amg V12 roadster  , 70 Imperial coupe   300 CD couoe , 70’s Dodge trucks, first year Vioer , 36 Packard Super 8 roadster  , Austin Healey aluminum LeMans ( put V8 in that ), 60 vette FI , 55 Bird ,   even a real Hemi Cuda stick came  and went .
I never felt  I overpaid  , why  hassle about it 5-10% if you want it — but that number for a G is 3 x my reality.
On the other hand I have  spent just as much on restoring a 15-20k Studebaker  as  a 300F
as I really like 50-54 stude coupes
To each his own .., $ not the point ?
But if you buy the 6 over some kind of $ issues , when you really wanted the 8 you will always  be unhappy

Been there ….
Interesting subject ..

Good vid with nice cars.
Relative to the G, I agree with Nick (I can't comment on the other two), especially as a hardtop.
G hardtops have come down in the last five years, unless they are outstanding fresh restorations, best in class.
This one looks great, although a few underhood details not correct (no hood pad, not 61 alternator, maybe more, didn't pay too much attention), wire wheels (beautiful but may not add value, although many of us like the wires correct or not).
Lighting also helps the cars look perfect, whether they are or not.
But no way worth 135k, not even close.
You won't even see 100k on a G coupe anymore.
And condition 2 and lower falls off sharply.  Most older restoration G coupes sales  (not perfect but nice) condition 2-3 fall in the 45k to 65k range, some outliers maybe up to 80k, but not 100k and above.
F coupe a little better but not a whole lot.
Convertibles, of course, are much higher.

I just watched it. Way too optimistic on the value of the car.
