I can relate to John's story, as I'm sure many can. Back in the days of no internet, no cell phones and less national media, finding a letter car for sale wasn't as easy. If you were looking to purchase, you were willing to accept some problems because the next car for sale meeting your criteria (year, price, equipment, condition etc.) may not come up for months. You never knew about the cars advertised locally in other areas of the country.

I bought my first 300G, a coupe, in 1980, as a 21 year old college kid. I'm outside Milwaukee, WI and the car was in Rochester, N.Y. Went out on a plane with my father. Packed a small tool box and nothing else. (You could take tools on the plane back then) No return tickets as I knew I was coming home with the car. It didn't want to re-start when hot so we drove straight through and never turned it off until it was back home in the driveway. I don't know if I'd do that again today, but back then you figured the worst that could happen is getting stuck on the side of the road.

It's about 44 years later and the car is sitting in my garage. I walk past it every day and drove it just last Sunday. One of the best decisions I ever made.

Times change, tastes change.  The good news for most of us is that we have these cars because they are our favorites, not because they represent our IRA/retirement funds or anyone else's taste in fine automobiles.  They may have fallen out of favor with investors/speculators/flippers, but that doesn't mean they won't find their way back again sometime in the future. 
For some time now the hobby has become (for me) more about the people than the cars.  When we congregate at a show or cruise, we are more likely to talk about family, friends, or health than the latest modification we made to our cars, and that's ok.

However the other thing going on is the waning interest in Chrysler letter cars. 20 years ago these were $150,000 cars but the hobby and tastes have moved on to later cars.

 

I do my best to solicit interest among younger car show attendees. Every young man that comes to my house to fix or maintain anything is given a free tour of my garage. Some are mildly interested or polite. Others are gobsmacked. We have to keep this up.
