Agree! Rule of thumb used by truck drivers is to go down steep inclines in the same gear you go up.  Sounds boring, but if you use second to go up, hit that second gear push button going down. I get concerned following drivers riding their brakes on inclines.  We have plenty of long steep ones around here  Have smelled burning brakes following new cars not just old ones.  Think about what options you have left if you actually have to stop in an emergency at the bottom of the incline...

I live on the other side of the hill and all my cars have brake heating issues from new cars to old cars is just long and steep. Just have to slooow down

Interesting observation about the braking distances in the Motor Life article.  The brakes in my G perform well, the only issue I’ve experienced has been coming back from meets in Lake Tahoe, Reno and Carson City NV to the Bay Area.  They can get hot and start to fade on the continuous decline sections.  That 2nd gear pushbutton does come in handy to bring in engine braking.  The 15” wheels and vented wheel covers of the ’61 help with cooling too.

I suppose if you wanted to buy a manual car in 1961, you knew how to double de-clutch.  Not a common skill  these days.

 

What I found interesting in the road test was it had braking distances.  This was not included very often back then.  I calculated these distances gave an average deceleration of about 1g.  Pretty good even today.

They were 3 speed with no syncro in 1st.
