Re: {Chrysler 300} 64 K AC compressor



My experience with all of this points to a number of things that should be first addressed. After all, our K's are 64 years old.
 
First, make sure the heater valve is not crusted up and is closing completely.
 
A high pressure reverse flush if mandatory even if you engine has been rebuilt. If yes,then how many years ago?
 
My K sat for years so a Lazarus project was in order. I had a weeping freeze plug, and when I popped it out, it was clear the ages took their toll, The gorp was unbelievable.
 
Popped it back in, and noticed how cruddy the top of the fin core was with the fluid level down.
 
Flushed it all out first with Irontite, then took the radiator in to be rodded.
 
With the rad out, the water pump came out and was shot. Well, half way home and I knew to inspect the timing chain on old MoPars and sure enough, it was stretched way out. See pic.
 
It is pretty important of our higher HP 413's to get the cam timing right, not only to get 360/375 out of these motors, but to run cooler.
 
The flush I believe is important. Why put a rebuilt of new rad on and then clog it up?
 
I know the flush worked very well, as I had a weeper act up as I was flushing. When popping this one out, I could see that the inside of the block looked like a fresh casting!
 
So my 7 cents (inflation) is check the heater valve, reverse flush the whole system. your choice on the rad route, and while the front of the engine is basically apart, inspect the timing chain.

Why replace? If the top and bottom tanks are good have it re-cored. I can’t speak for what goes on in California. But here on the east coast we have plenty of radiator shops. The stock radiator in good condition was properly sized, it worked then, it will work today if in good condition. Global warming has yet to make larger capacity radiators necessary on antique automobiles.

Are replacement radiators for 413s available? 


i’d add old radiator to that , corrosion in tubes or someone painted it with normal paint . Sometimes back flush with right type air / water gun made  for that helps . 

Every time i had overheating , after a lot of messing around and theories a new radiator fixed it ,

Big $ now , but way it is

Mike-

Generally speaking a car that runs hot on the road has one of two problems. First is inadequate coolant flow through the radiator because of a clogged radiator, collapsed lower hose, or less frequently, a worn impeller on the water pump. The second is inadequate airflow  through the radiator because of an improper fan, a malfunctioning fan clutch if so equipped, or a missing or improperly installed fan shroud. The fan blades should be roughly half-way inside the shroud.

 

Yes, improper timing, too lean a mixture and similar matters can contribute to overheating, they sound good but are almost always not the problem.  Like much in life, it’s the simple stuff that needs correction. Start with water & air flow first.

I left the K with my mechanic for a couple months when I was away. He installed the new compressor and recharged with R134. Car overheated badly so me added a couple of ugly electric fans ( without telling me). It cools well now but chronically runs right up at the very top of the range on the temp gauge. He tells me the radiator must be bad....

 

Car lives in NY and it certainly has been hot this summer but that is why we have AC. Do the wise folks here have any insights? Live with it? Replace radiator ( seems ok to me)? I suppose I would be ok with the fans as car is certainly not perfect anyway but as they hardly work, more seems in order.

Folks

I went to my mechanic to get our key updated to our 134 refrigerant and I was told that the old York AC compressor is no good. He told me that replacements were impossible, and that the best solution was to convert to a modern AC system. I have done that on my age, but this car is so original that I hate to think about tampering with that. On the other hand, it's sure nice to have air conditioning! I'm confident that someone in this small world of Chrysler crazies has had this experience too and has some wisdom to impart. Thanks in advance.
