RE: {Chrysler 300} 64 K AC compressor

I would start from the bottom up.

  1. Replace the thermostat just because.
  2. Does this car have a shroud? All the factory A/C cars did.
  3. Does the car have the “A/C Fan” with the clutch or the non-A/C car fan?
  4. Check the timing to make sure it is correct, and the heat is not due do to too much advance.
  5. Check the Air Fuel ratio to make sure it is not running lean and that is causing the heat.

If all that checks out fine, then it may be time for a new radiator and/or a water pump. What fans did the mechanic put on the car?  Photos of the engine bay on both sides of the radiator would help.

When I purchased my 300K 24 months ago, the first thing I did was strip the front of the engine colling stuff off and replace it all. Thermostat, Water Pump, put the correct fan on it, new radiator and all the hoses and clamps.

It runs fine in the heat. In a couple of weeks when the new condenser shows up, we shall see how the A/C works.

James.

I left the K with my mechanic for a couple months when I was away. He installed the new compressor and recharged with R134. Car overheated badly so me added a couple of ugly electric fans ( without telling me). It cools well now but chronically runs right up at the very top of the range on the temp gauge. He tells me the radiator must be bad....

Car lives in NY and it certainly has been hot this summer but that is why we have AC. Do the wise folks here have any insights? Live with it? Replace radiator ( seems ok to me)? I suppose I would be ok with the fans as car is certainly not perfect anyway but as they hardly work, more seems in order.

Thanks all

The eBay rebuilder certainly looks like a solid supplier. Good find.

I have batted 1000 with Original Air for various product and services, and my buds have all had good business with them.

Folks

I went to my mechanic to get our key updated to our 134 refrigerant and I was told that the old York AC compressor is no good. He told me that replacements were impossible, and that the best solution was to convert to a modern AC system. I have done that on my age, but this car is so original that I hate to think about tampering with that. On the other hand, it's sure nice to have air conditioning! I'm confident that someone in this small world of Chrysler crazies has had this experience too and has some wisdom to impart. Thanks in advance.
