I have run two sets of DB Tires. One on my ’49 Convertible that does 500 miles a year. Those so far are fine.

 

I have had two sets of their tires on my 1947 Desoto that got driven a lot.  I had a problem where on a couple of their tires the whitewall seam, where the two ends met, started to show there.

 

A friend of mine also had the same issue and had to send a few tires back as well.

 

The other problem I had with their tires is one started to cup up front.

On this issue I strongly agree with Danny.  Ten years ago I was a fan of American Classic.  Prices were lower (more comparable to other offerings), whitewalls stayed white, and the ride was good.  Only issue was excessive weights to balance.

 

Now, I would not buy ANY size American Classic again. 

 

This is anecdotal. obviously, but seeing more often from posters- last set I bought (2022) - whitewalls have discolored, look horrid,  vibration at 70+ mph despite proper balancing, very overpriced.  

 

Diamondback - zero issues, ever.  And prices are now very comparable to other offerings.

With 9 antiques I've tried just about all the tires. 

 

Don't lament the unavailability of Coker's American Classic 235/75/14. I have them on a 63 Galaxie. It took 3 tries to get one set without microbubbles on the sidewalls. Once I did I found them all but impossible to fully balance, they are out of round, and the whitewalls turned a dull beige. The car shakes a bit at speed.  All this for $400 a crack? 

 

On the other hand I have had better luck with Coker's bias ply look radials, which are on my 300 F & 56 Cadillac. These balanced better, ride well and whitewalls have remained that way. I understand Diamondback is now selling a bias ply look radial. I have bought tires from Diamondback and never been unhappy.

Coker still lists the American Classic 235R75/14 on its website, but is no longer selling them. Lots of production problems and poor quality over the past 2-3 years, per recent listserver emails. Coker has designed and was beta testing them, scheduled for available sale this past June. However, not in production and not in stock as of now. Dave Dumais had been promised a set in June. Didn’t happen. 

 

The 225R75/14 size that Carl mentions is currently our best available option. 

Side note - my Bosch battery crapped out on me yesterday, so I went over to Napa, that had an Interstate Grp 27 in stock, but then to my local mechanic who had the same battery cheaper. Installed that and back on the road. 

Busy week this week - 3 cruise nites, a Mopar party and 2 car shows including Mopars at the Red Barns last Saturday. Out of 448 Mopars at Gilmore, my F took a ‘Top 20’ trophy. Great to see that Rick King’s and Burt Romer’s K convertibles also won Top 20 trophies!

I prefer ordering tires from Summit because they only charge $10/tire for shipping.  They are also speedy and wrap the tires well.  When I last ordered from Coker, the shipping was expensive and the tires were not wrapped as well.  Although with Coker you can get a 10% discount if you are in the Hagerty drivers club.

FYI………I just recently returned from Chryslers at Carlisle. I am needing a set of tires for my 300E… the old 235/75 R 14 is preferable. By chance I stumbled upon the Coker Tire vendor spot on the fairgrounds. After waiting a half hour for some fellow who couldn’t decide what he wanted and wound up leaving without any decisions being made, I sauntered up to the Coker rep who was waiting, laptop in hand. I asked him to please give me a price on their newly improved Coker Classic in the aforementioned 235 size. The price he quoted me was $435 per tire, before any taxes, fees or shipping. So it looks like if you ordered a full set of these tires and had them shipped to …say Illinois, you would be spending close to $2000 for a set of tires. No wonder Coker no longer lists their tire prices in the hobby magazines.

As Dave Dumais emailed me this morning, the brand new Coker radials that he had ordered and that were promised him by June are still not available.

 

The next best radial size is the slightly smaller 225R75/14, available from 2 sources. There's Diamondback - www.dbtires.com. Their various tire offerings are manufactured in different countries, including China and South Korea. Several of our Club members have been running these, and are happy with them. This past Saturday, I visited with Marilyn Reed at Mopars at the Red Barns at the Gilmore Car Museum, who just had these mounted a month ago on the 300-F coupe she and her late husband, Mike Reed have owned for 45 years. Marilyn said her F "drives like a dream" with these new tires. 

 

A second source for the 225R75/14 tires is Kontio - that I understand are engineered in Finland and manufactured in China. Some of our Club members are running these and are reportedly happy with them.

 

You can click on the 'archives' link attached to this email and read the recent emails discussing these various tires. Kontios are I think less expensive than Diamondbacks.
