In my personal experience, the NGK Iridium spark plugs are MUCH superior to even the previous-generation V-Power.  The "V" just meant a V-shaped groove cut into the ground electrode to provide alternate spark paths, depending upon which had the lowest resistance at any particular instant.  The V-Power plugs also have a copper-core, nickel-clad large (~0.040" diameter) center electrode.  On the other hand, The fine-wire center electrode (0.016" diameter) on the NGK IX plugs provides a more concentrated high-voltage/low resistance origin for the spark, heats up faster when firing and cools down faster on the intake stroke so it won't create a hot spot for preignition.  The higher temperature that the Iridium center electrode allows will burn off  deposits from fuel-rich mixtures and oil-impregnated environments like on my two-stroke racing engines, and is much more tolerant of a fuel-rich environment in any 4-stroke engine, especially those with 60-year old carburetors like our 300's that have notoriously poor mixture regulation (compared to modern fuel injection systems).  Those new-generation plugs had MUCH better fouling resistance on my 2-stroke oil-rich racing engines than the earlier Silver, Gold, and Platinum versions.

I put NGK Iridium plugs in my 300C 392 hemi (with Pertronix in the distributor) and it now starts in barely one crank revolution and seems impervious to the vagaries of carburetion mixture ratio (even with 4,000-ft elevation changes climbing some nearby mountains) on my restored WCFB's.  My 2016 Corvette came with NGK Iridium plugs (or Denso Iridium equivalent) from the factory, and are slated for replacement at 97,500 miles!

Given the relative difficulty of replacing spark plugs and the fouling and mixture ratio tolerance superiority of the Iridium plugs, it makes the tiny (~ $3/each) price difference compared to the V-Power plugs totally insignificant!  I most DEFINITELY  recommend the NGK Iridium plugs for replacement in almost any vehicle you own!  Plug and play and forget them!

Hi Keith,

1964 non-ram 413s had the wire towers (aka "wire stands") preattached to the valve covers.  1963 did not have the towers preattached.  They were separate pieces and attached by the valve cover nuts.

300J used 4 bolt heads and valve covers.  300K Ram used 6 bolt heads and valve covers, but the valve covers had the separately attached wire towers like 1963.

I use the woven shields.  Good for 1200 degrees or so.

Hi Carl

Thank you for an incredibly thorough and detailed response - I will get a set of those NGK’s!

Crazy on Lectric’s old price and as you say, small wonder they ditched it.

Our car already has the ram exhaust manifolds on it and I don’t recall if it has those steel heat shields on the plugs but I do have seven woven heat sleeves for plug wires that I can use on the new motor.

The original 4 barrel engine in the car has the wire loom brackets (towers?)  on the valve covers . Are you saying that the short ram cars used the same valve cover? I actually bought a set of “non bracket/tower” valve covers as I thought those things would interfere with the underside of the short rams.

In spite of the appearance, I may go with the Mopar Mall/ Atlas Obsolete wires and use the heat sleeves as it’s clear that they are needed!
I noted your feedback not long ago on the color of the wires. I recently bought a very original 1964 Studebaker R2 4 speed GT Hawk that is very original (10/21/63 build date). It had the orange Prestolite wires (it also has factory dual voltage point Prestolite distributor, like the K.)

Thanks!

Hi Keith,

The easy answer first - spark plugs.  I recommend the NGK V-power.  I just installed a set of XR5 (#3332) plugs on my J and am pleased thus far.  Available inexpensively at Rock Auto.  You can upgrade with iridium and such but much more expensive.

The difficult answer next - spark plug wies.  The Lectric Limited set for J and Ram K was correct in appearance and probably fit well.  It was $950 some ten years ago.  That is not a typo.  No wonder it has been discontinued.  The Lectric Limited set for F/G would not be correct in appearance but can work, but as you state, some of the wires are too long. I just made wires for my G using correct reproduction spark plug holders from the late Michael Burke and correct wire routing.  Wires for #5 and #7 are much longer and #8 is longer.  #6 is shorter.  The remainder would fit ok.  The problem is not just the headers, but the wire  routing is different on J and ram K.  63-64 used the big spark plug wire towers attached to the valve covers, the F used none of those, and the G only used the big tower for #1 and #3.

The only ready made set for J and Ram K that I am aware of is offered by Atlas Obsolete.  It is not correct at all in appearance.  I have no idea how well it fits.  Here is the listing:  PN 2421836 spark plug wire set for 1963 Chrysler 300J and 1964 300K with dual ram induction (moparmall.com)

Your next option is to buy a "semi-custom universal" set, which would only require cutting the wires to proper length and attaching the spark plug boots (which will be included).  Most (but maybe not all) of these universal sets have long enough wires.

No matter what you use you will need heat sleeves over the boots on at least #5,#7, #6, #8 and preferably on all 8 boots or the header heat will destroy the boots on a long run.  Ask Jamie about his drive to Kokomo.  Changing plug boots on a J or ram K in a parking lot gets old real fast.  The wires take a beating as well.  High temp rated silicone is advised.

If you desire reasonably correct appearance, your only option is to custom make your own set.   I like to get my supplies from Ton's Performance  Ignition parts and accessories – Ton's Performance (tonsperformance.com)  It is not that difficult to make your own wires.  You need a really good crimper.  I use one from MSD.   The J and ram K used a dark orange 7mm wire (same color wire was used on early 413 and 426 max wedge Dodge and Plymouth) with orange spark plug boots and 180 degree black distributor boots.   The spark plug boots were 90 degrees except for #3 which was an obtuse angle like F and G for the dipstick tube (but 90 degree will work ok on #3).   I can no longer find 7mm orange wire in bulk.  But 8mm bright orange wire in bulk and universal sets is readily available online and still looks more correct than black wire imho.

Hi Keith,

I don't expect the Lectric Limited 6302-000 wires we're running on our F and G longram cars will work on the shortram '63-'64 cars. A very few years ago, Lectric was offering shortram wire sets, but they were far more expensive - somewhere in the $300-$400 range per set. I don't know if it was just the high price point that caused them to discontinue these, or if they had additional issues with their performance.

I'm interested in hearing Carl's opinion, as he custom makes his own wire sets for his cars.

Hi Folks

What are you short ram folks using for spark plugs?

Also, Lectric Limited doesn’t make a set of wires for these cars . I do have a set of their 300F 6302 wires that I asked them about but they won’t commit to them being a good fit. Because of the difference in exhaust manifolds they might be a bit long but figured I’d ask you folks if there’s a ready-made option Note: I have these Lectric 300F wires because I made my own wires for the F from a Summit Racing set because it has an MSD box and prefer not to do it again.)

Is Napa a short ram “ready made set” option?

Thanks in advance!

Keith
