Re: {Chrysler 300} 300 F Golden Tone 5 button radio antenna trimmer

Yes I understand their proprietary standards. But some of these technicians might be able to fix the OEM radio problems. Ralph ended up being really keen on troubleshooting and I would never had known about him if I hadn’t looked at the Aurora website.

Yeah I keep getting the same " we can do the conversion but won't sell the parts" response from these guys. There has to be a distributor for this stuff.

It feels just like the whole archaic, stodgy " rule" that Sally Beauty supply has when it comes to selling clippers and gear to the public, lol! Anyone should be able to procure these parts but I am coming up short finding anything.

Thanks for the tip though, maybe they can help me fix my AM/FM one in my 65 Imperial.

If you go to the Aurora website there is information on the authorized installers across the U.S. There might be someone local.
When I was in the Northern Illinois area I found Ralph the Radio Guy and was able to drive it to his place and pick it back up when the Aurora convention was completed. He also repaired a few other Mopar radios for me.

So does anyone know of where we can buy a DIY kit to do the swap? Seems like these conversion folks are backed way up ( like a year or more) and there seems to be enough knowledge base out there to do the conversion if one were handy with electronics. Everything I see seems to be " locked up" with the conversion shops themselves and not available to the public or hobbyist. Any links would be nice. Thanks!

I am determining what to do with one of my 1962 5-button radios for my NY Wagon.
(I will get to my 7-button, foot switch radio when I go to assemble my 300-H)

I want it capable to stream music from cell phone through the solo speaker.
I have done some research and it seems the best case scenario is to do an “Aurora Conversion”.
And then I saw how much that is to do - WOOF!

My radio doesn’t work anymore, so I need to either fix it in stock mode or do this Aurora job.
Unless anyone else has any other ideas out there…..?

Thanks!

Carl,

Thanks for posting the radio repair link you and John Grady compiled for the site. Very detailed and helpful.

I have the original Sams Photofact service pages for both the 5 button Mopar (model 317) and the seven button (models 404, 407).  These cover ’60 to ’62 F,G,H and related. I have these scanned as pdfs and am willing to share with any member in need.  Contact me directly.

Radio?  Did someone say radio?  We have just about everything you'd ever want to know about letter car radios on our tech page here:  chrysler300club.com/tech/radio/1.html

"The former owner added a rear antenna."  Yes, that will absolutely require a trimmer adjustment.  I prefer to adjust on an actual weak station around 1400 Khz, if you can receive one.
The rear antenna may look cool, but could also attenuate signal strength with the longer cable lead and depending on how good the connections are.

Tubes are the least likely cause of problems.  They tend to last forever in a car radio with normal use.  There are other internal components that could cause reception issues, but start with the simple stuff like the antenna and trimmer.

Tune the radio to 16 on the dial.  Antenna compensator is a recessed flat head screw adjacent to the antenna socket on the back of the radio.  Adjust for maximum volume.

You could have weak tubes or something else going on with the radio if that doesn't cure things.

The former owner added a rear antenna and the radio seems as though it needs a trimmer adjustment. No white noise static anywhere but in the middle of the dial I get a full throated Christian evangelical minister, so I think it works, unless it's just divine intervention.

Can the trimmer be adjusted in the car, with me under the radio? Where is that trimmer?
