Thanks Gents. I'll give that a try.

Radio?  Did someone say radio?  We have just about everything you'd ever want to know about letter car radios on our tech page here:  chrysler300club.com/tech/radio/1.html
"The former owner added a rear antenna."  Yes, that will absolutely require a trimmer adjustment.  I prefer to adjust on an actual weak station around 1400 Khz, if you can receive one.
The rear antenna may look cool, but could also attenuate signal strength with the longer cable lead and depending on how good the connections are.
Tubes are the least likely cause of problems.  They tend to last forever in a car radio with normal use.  There are other internal components that could cause reception issues, but start with the simple stuff like the antenna and trimmer.

Tune the radio to 16 on the dial.  Antenna compensator is a recessed flat head screw adjacent to the antenna socket on the back of the radio.  Adjust for maximum volume.
You could have weak tubes or something else going on with the radio if that doesn't cure things.

The former owner added a rear antenna and the radio seems as though it needs a trimmer adjustment. No white noise static anywhere but in the middle of the dial I get a full throated Christian evangelical minister, so I think it works, unless it's just divine intervention.

Can the trimmer be adjusted in the car, with me under the radio? Where is that trimmer?
