I will take your word for it on a cotter pin being used at the factory sometimes. I know that on both the units I rebuilt in the 1980â€™s they had a pin. The hardtop was family since new and I know for sure it never was apart before I did that car. I think they were roll pins. Yes, they were a PITA to get out.

John at Big M just contacted me and he is going to pull a pin for me and. I will run up in the AM and get it.

I get that it cannot come out once in place. But this guy did such a bad job of using a cotter pin that it was rubbing on the inside of the column. He also allowed one side of the pin to bend up in the slot and it chewed the rubber to death.

The cotter pin is common, and is FACTORY. If you look at how all this goes together, there is no way possible to loose steering. The pin is there just to hold the shaft in place when assembling. It also helps to line up the rubber piece, shims, and ground strap. The shaft has a slot in it to account for production tolerances. Some had a roll pin, and if you have ever had to take one out in the car, you would be happy for the cotter pin.

Hi all,

I took a 3 day weekend and run to my place out of town to swap the steering on the 300K.

I found that I want to go back in time and slap someone around!

When I pulled the column out and went to tap out the roll pin, I found a mess. A totally shredded rubber isolation bushing and a COTTER PIN in place of the hardened steel pin!

Someone could have been killed had that rather soft cotter pin sheared. A cotter pin is not designed for that.

Now I am at a dead stop. I tried to give John up at Big M a call and his line is screwed up with static when I try and call. If you have ever seen his office...

Anyone who can put their hands on one of those pins, can I get a detailed measurement of all dimensions? Also the thickness of it walls. I do not remember if it was a solid pin, a split pin or what. Some photos would help.

Crap. Crap. Crap. I hate driving 80 miles and clearing three days for nothing.
