Heavy truck brakes squel like that when they get glazed over This drums and shoes are highly polished when you remove them. They get that way after a lot of heavy braking with a heavy loads on the truck.

Mark, have you lubricated the brake shoe contact points on the backing plate? Are you sure you have the front shoe in the forward position and not mixed up? Have you tried new springs?

Hello All,

I have owned this 1963 Chrysler 300 for over 33 years. In the last 5 years or so, a RIGHT Front brake squeal has been happening as follows.

It does not happen when I start driving and the brakes are cold. The brake shoes were changed to new shoes and new wheel cylinders (done at a shop) and this also happened a bit on the previous set of front brake shoes.
It happens when slowing down to a stop – between 10-0 MPH.
It has got a bit better as the brake shoes have worn to match the curvature of the drum.
I swapped another drum that was not cut as thin and the results were a little bit better at first, but the sound was still there, just a different tone of squeal.
As the brakes heat up, the sound begins and gets gradually louder.
I have taken the drum off and cleaned the dust out and wiped the brake shoes off. After a short time, the sound comes back.
If you have ever heard a dump truck slow down next to you at a stop light, this is what it sounds like.

Questions:
Could the brake shoe be vibrating against the back plate?
If you have ever taken your wet finger and rubbed it against a half filled wine glass and then heard a sound, it seems like that.
At one time, I think I read that the drums should be resurfaced with a cross-hatched pattern? Could this reduce the squeal?

I have not cut the drum because I know they are hard to locate and I prefer to not cut them any more than what is needed. Any suggestions are appreciated. Yes, I have read the shop manual.
