Re: {Chrysler 300} Break lights not bright enough?

Hi Steve,

I agree with Dave Schwandt’s comment. In your dark garage, try all your rear light combos - taillights, directionals, backups, brake. Also check the fronts - parking, low beam, high beam, directionals.

IF - just no brake lights is your issue, then it’s most likely the small hydraulic switch that screws into the bottom of the master cylinder. 1st test is very easy - make sure both wire leads are connected to the terminals protruding from the bottom of that hydraulic switch. (I’ve accidentally knock a wire off my switch on a couple occasions). 2nd step would be to replace the switch. Not sure where the ‘61-and-newer switch is installed. I’m still running a hydraulic switch, and am running DOT4 brake fluid.

Once you’re set with your brake lights working, you can replace with LEDs in the rear taillights. Following John Begian in his G on the open road to recent Meets, he installed LEDs in his taillights, which worked out great. The ‘61 taillights are generally less visible than our F taillights. But John said don’t use LEDs in the front parking lights.

Steve, maybe you DON”T have brake lights??

What kind of setup do you have for brake light switch??

Still have the hydraulic one on the master cylinder?

If so, make sure it is working when the brakes are applied, use a test lamp.

If you are/have been using silicone fluid, that switch will likely fail if it hasn’t already.

Best to convert to mechanical switch under the dash like 61’s and up used.

Good luck in your diagnosis.

Are you sure they're coming on? Easy way to check brightness by yourself is to use the turn signals. These aren't the brightest lights in full sun because of the way they're mounted on the car. Another problem with them is that there is a reflector on the inside around the bulb that can fall off. If it fell of and someone just left it out, the light won't be concentrated in the middle of the lens enough.

Once I actually got my brake lights working on my F (loose connection at the switch), they're actually pretty good with standard bulbs.

Question,

Just got back from a short drive with my lovely wife following in her car to check break and turn signals. Tough to do this by one's self. Getting ready to drive up to that state up north for the fall 300 meet and she commented that break lights are not, bright. Like I don,t have break lights. Sunday, while pulling in my drive, guy behind came flying up and yelled something but radio was to loud.

Any way to brighten the taillights. I am going to buy new bulbs and replace the ones that are in there now.

Thanks in advance, and hope to see everyone in a few weeks.
