Hi Mark,
Beginning in 1966 when I bought my 300H, I always bought Sears (Michelin) radial tires for my car. In 1978, the engine mysteriously seized one night while my 16 year old son had it out on a date. The car was towed to a side yard and sat for several year outside,The tires became flat over time. In 1982,I inflated the tires and had the car towed to Lee Hamilton Racing Engines in Quincy Illinois before I moved to California. I sent them checks periodically with the instructions to rebuild engine, tranny brakes and suspension, and see that it was driven by someone in the shop prior to me flying back and ferrying it home to California.In 1985, we flew back and picked up the car. I was concerned about the old tires (Michelin) and I took it to the Michelin dealer. I told him I was going to California and was concerned about the age and abuse the tires had taken. The salesman looked, had mechanic checked them and advised it would be a waste of money. So we set off with tires at least 10 years old and very much abused.
But that's not the story.
They ALL failed one at a time. They failed by belt separation, at high speeds at all 4 corners. There was never a hint of loss of control . Because I wanted to buy an entire matched set of tires, I convinced myself each failure was a fluke, so I would buy a cheap used tire at the gas station (they never failed!).
I would suggest you buy a new set f tires but not out of fear. It was very inconvenient to have to change and replace tries on the road.
I also later contacted an engineer at Michelin. He would not commit, but said that if I had a tire removed and the inside of the carcass inspected for cracks, it would likely be good for another year and another inspection.He also said if the car was stored n a cool shady place, they would be safe much longer, He also argued thatchy would never be "unsafe" (??).

All;
I’m trying to get by on a set of Coker Classics in my 300F, but want to drive the car about 250 mi north to the 300 Club meet in Rohnert Park in a couple of weeks.
The tires seem fine as I tool around Palm Desert on 20-30 mi runs, often at 60- 70 mph in stretches.
Lots of tread depth and no side wall cracks or blisters but here are some hair line cracks on the side wall running parallel to the wheel, just outside the wheel lip.
I’ve been told everything from ‘get new tires immediately to cheap sob’ to ‘if the cracks deepen to 1/8", it’s time to buy new tires’ to ‘hell, roll ‘em off the rims, it’s all a scam by the manufacturers just trying to get you to buy more tires more often’.
It’s hot weather here now, 90-100 in the daytime and I’ll be rolling up I5 to San Francisco at 60-65 mph. It’s likely 7-8 hours with three or four stops along the way.
Question: ‘get new tires you cheap sob’ or ‘roll ‘em off the rims’?
Thanks,
Mark
