Chris and John,
Thanks for your input.
My take on the VIN # issue process for 1962:
1. The aluminum vin plate had the last 8 numbers pressed into it from the underside.
2. The first two numbers were stamped onto the plate with what appears to be some type of a punch.
3. The first two numbers indicate the model - 81 for Newport, 82 for Sport 300, 83 for New Yorker, 84 for 300H, etc.
4. The process that makes sense to me is that at some place on the assembly line the vin# was attached and the plates with the pre-produced last 8 numbers were used in numerical sequence.
5. As the car came to that station in the assembly line, the first two numbers were stamped on the plate to define the model.
John, My car was probably assembled on the first day of production at the Jefferson plant for the 1962 model year - Monday, August 21,1961 - so I doubt that there were any special order cars in the system at that time. Also I doubt that computers were in use at that time- probably only IBM punch cards.
Chris, I would guess that the current process in determining vin numbers is totally different today.
Thanks again,
Doug Warrener

Chris,
I second that. Currently when a car order is firm (I have parts to build it), it is put into the plant system, which is when it goes from a "gleam in your eyes" to an actual VIN. As the cars come down the line today, they are built with sequence numbers, in order, but VIN's are all over the map, at least that's how we do it at FCA, aka Chrysler. With a VIN of 00064 it is a very early car.

From my study of VIN's and data plate dates, I strongly believe that your car was the 64th car order to be received and entered into the computer system. Cars were not assembled in consecutive VIN order.
My "two cents"

Subject: [Chrysler300] VIN # Question
Hi Group,
My 1962 sport conv. has the vin # 8223100064.
The car was assembled on 8-21-61.
Does the 00064 portion of the number mean that the car was the 64th Chrysler ( NY, 300, 300H, or Newport) to go down the assembly line?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Doug Warrener
