Hmmmmmm....I just checked and the 300G grille certainly Is NOT Plastic. While it always appeared to be plastic it is most certainly metal / aluminum and Black.

I must be misunderstanding something in this discussion. Exactly what part of the Grille are you talking about ?
 
I may be completely wrong but....On a 1961 300G, Isn't the part of the of the grille just behind the crossbars .... black PLASTIC and Unpainted ?
