5/8" is correct and it is very hard to get on and equally hard to get off.
Supposed to be that way.

DO NOT!!! Use 5/8" heater hose under any circumstances!
It will weep/seep fluid from the inside out and hasten failure and maybe
even be a fire hazzard
Besides, shiny wet looking red hose (heater hose too) are the 1st detraction
from a stock looking engine compartment (IMHO)
Same goes for anything  other than a black battery w/proper tie down and
cables. Again JMHO

I would like to know the ID of the return hose for the 1961G. The parts
store said I should use 5/8 ID but it is very hard to get on if anyone has
any thoughts let me know?
