Now, it actually works properly sometimes, bounces sometimes and lays on zero sometimes.  Is this more evidence of a lubrication problem in the cable?

Hi,

When the needle bounces up and down a few minutes, then stays on zero, is there 
any way to know if it's the cable or the head?

I had both reconditoned a few thousand miles ago (about 8 years). 

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
