I would not recommend "upgrading" to 12 volts your '55 C300.  My '55 C300
cranks and runs great with single 6 volt Optima hidden in a "cloaking
device".  15 years ago I focused upon a new wiring harness, new 1 gauge
battery cables with clean grounds and connections, refreshed starter and
generator and new voltage regulator.  This process has worked well over the
years with 6 volt Porsche 356's to which most enthusiasts would not want
"upgrade" to 12 volts either.
