I kept my original type single bowl master cylinder. As I recall, the installation instructions stated no need to change master cylinder. I have driven the car about 12K miles since the install, and have never had to add brake fluid. Something to keep in mind: with drum brakes, when you release the pressure on the brake pedal, the brake shoe springs push a lot of fluid out of the wheel cylinder and back into the master cylinder. With disc brakes, when you release the pressure on the pedal, the caliper simply relaxes, pushing very little fluid back into the master cylinder. When your hydraulic system is working properly with zero leaks, the only time you should have to add fluid is when your disc pads wear down. To me, that's an obvious sign telling me to change the pads.
