[Chrysler300] Larry Jabin's D,Gold air cleaners, and powdercoat finishes

Larry,

I know a lot of people love powder coating, but I have to say I am truly 
not a fan of the results of the process at all. I've found that it's 
extremely durable where it adheres to the surface, but that's about all 
it has going for it. It doesn't always hang on forever as its promoters 
claim.

If there is any contaminant or rust that it can't grab on to, you have a 
potential for delamination of the coating as with any coating method. 
And any tight corners into which the powder doesn't get magnetically 
attracted can be the start of some fresh rust that will, in time, reach 
under the powder coat and flake it off - and there is no good touchup 
way to even fix that.

They also have a hard  time bringing parts with a lot of mass up to 
proper temperatures for complete melting of the powder unless they pay 
very careful attention. At least with liquid spray spray coating you can 
shoot it into those tight corners, you can touch it up if you have a 
little problem, and it will perform nicely on a heavy part. On top of 
that, powder coating gives you limited control over the surface look and 
sheen.

Far better IMHO to liquid coat with polyurethane or even liquid epoxy 
than to go the powder route.  The results will be more controlled and 
they will be longer lasting.

The only strong argument I know of for powdercoat is its environmental 
friendliness - all you have to do is fog it on and heat it up. All the 
overspray can be re-used and there's no air pollution.

I'm staying with sprayed on paints.

the paint they like to use for the gold air cleaners and valve covers:

I plan on driving it a lot so I am looking for durability I will also 
talk to Jeff he is working on my power seat right now.

 

 I am having a Prismatic Powders in Oregon matching the color on one of 
my air cleaners. They have 65,000 colors they came up with 2 that were 
close but I am having them formulate a new color for my air cleaners & 
valve covers. Again I am looking for Durability. But I want the colors 
to be as close as possible.

 

Let know your thoughts on the Gold color

That depends a little on whether you are going for concours points or if 
you want to drive it some without having the first coolant drip wreck 
your new paint job.

I don't know what to use for true concours, but Jeff Carter at JC Auto 
says he has had great success using 1995 Mercedes Benz polyurethane. The 
product is DuPont Chromabase H9672.  According to Jeff, a little road 
splash and oil or coolant drips wash right back off. I'm just about to 
do my 300C engine, and that is what I plan to use.

Next we can get into the question of what the best valve cover and air 
cleaner gold is.
