The higher one goes in altitude, the less octane is required. This is generally stated as for every rise of 1000 feet of altitude, one half point LESS of octane is required.
Thus, if you leave sea level and travel 4000 feet up into the Rocky Mountains, you will likely find they are selling fuel with two points less octane than what you filled up with when you left home.
