Hi Larry,
I think if you don't let them run dry, they won't leave you stuck. By design, I don't see how the joint would separate unless you had a catastrophic failure. I've had mine go bad a couple times in 21 years of driving and, in my experience, it resulted in a vibration while accelerating, but things would balance out at a steady speed. However, heed the warning signs and take care of it asap - it will get worse. Most recently, I was getting some vibration off and on going to the Maine meet a couple weeks ago. The vibration seemed to go away, but then it started squeaking at low speeds when we stopped for the night on the way home. I dropped it out in the morning and packed it with grease in the motel parking lot (it wasn't dry) and it ran quiet and vibration-free for the remaining 600 miles home. I'm going to drive it to one more local show, but it's on my winter project list.
Andy

I'm putting together the list of winter work and updating the axle is a
consideration. When the ball and trunion driveshaft fails does it mean you
can limp it home or I would be dead by the side of the road?
