I used dish washing soap and hot water to remove the gray goop. I
resealed/rebedded with a black silicon RTV ( I think, it has been
several years). For plastic lenses, if they are not scratched or
marred, I like toothpaste. Yes, toothpaste has a very fine polishing
grit in it. It is finer than Brasso and can be kept wet with water
to keep it working as the grit breaks down into finer particles. If
the lenses are scratched, I use fine wet-dry sandpaper to smooth it
down. I usually start with either 400 or 600 grit, depending on the
depth of the scratches to achieve a smooth surface and then work up
through finer grits to 1200 grit and finally 2000 grit, alternating
sanding directions with each new grit. I think you get better
results with straight sanding rather than circular. After that the
toothpaste provides a final gloss finish. Best to use a small
sanding block with the sandpaper to avoid finger grooves. Mask off
any non-removable trim pieces.
This is a procedure my father (amateur watchmaker/jeweller) used to
refurbish plastic watch crystals when replacements were not
available. Left them looking new.
