RE: [Chrysler300] Battery Choices

Driving for extended periods with high voltage going to the conventional wet
cell (flooded) battery or a sealed AGM (absorbed glass mat like Optima) or
gel cell type will cause problems regardless of type. The wet battery will
boil over and cause acid damage but not necessarily kill the battery as they
are more forgiving. If you do the same with a sealed battery, you will dry
it out and it will become scrap.

Chrysler put ammeters on our instrument panels for a reason, you need to
keep an eye on it. If the gauge indicates excessive charging, look into why
that is happening. If the car has sat for an extended period, and the
battery is low, high output is expected. If, however, after adequate time
has passed once the engine is running, and the ammeter is still reading
high, your voltage regulator is probably not maintaining the desired
voltage, which is about 13.5 to 14.8 volts. If you go above that, you will
have problems.

Running the headlights won't fix the problem but it may slow down the damage
to the battery because some of the current will be flowing through the
lights and not the battery. The higher the amperage output of the
alternator, the less running the lights will help. Best bet is to get the
voltage regulator replaced. Check the charging voltage at the battery with
a digital volt meter and that will tell the story. Look for 13.5 to 14.8,
no more, no less. Too low, and the battery won't get charged, too high, and
you will dry it out.
